To be a successful freelancer in today's market, It is important to have a globally viable plan. Something that allows a freelancer to compete on an international basis. With the internet, you, as a freelancer, are now limited only by your ability, not your location.

However, as with all businesses, there are many things that you need to consider if you want your business/work to be successful. An important factor is to find a niche. Sometimes, freelancers become too generalised and claim that they can preety much do anything. However, it is best to specialise in a few things and land work in that genre. This way, you are likely to not only get paid more, but be appreciated by clients, as you will be doing a few things well, rather than trying to do everything and being mediocre at them.
You are your best asset, and you need to project yourself to prospective clients in the best possible way. To do that, you will need a great portfolio that showcases your capabilities with stellar samples of your work.

Another important consideration is deciding on your price. Many freelancers believe that they must drop thier prices in order to compete in the market. While that may be true to some degree, experienced clients have pretty good ideas about the costs of the required services. If they can get it cheaper, then they will, because it saves them money. However, the bottom line with an honest employer will inevitably the quality, consistency and delivery time.
Actively promote yourself. This means that you may need to register with several freelance bidding services and blogs, in order to put yourself at the front line of the buying public. Simply stated, you have to create buzz and actively seek work assignments. Come up with some clever marketing ideas and slogans to set yourself apart. In other words, sell your skills and expertise to your prospective clients before they can actually see your work. If you are offering graphics design services, make sure that you have a killer logo. If you are selling your writing skills, write things about yourself that are interesting enough you get someone's attention. While marketing yourself, keep in mind that most people only read the first few lines, and if these lines fail to grab the attention, Then they are very likely to move on.

Marketing is a game. You should plan out a strategy and timeline, and do what you can to accomplish things in that order.
